Character Sighting: Mulan is often found in China.

Mulan Trivia
Disney’s animated feature “Mulan” is based on the Chinese Legend of “Hua Mulan.” While the Disney version stayed pretty true to the story, the dateline is out of whack.
The legend dates back to 386-554 AD.
However, the Forbidden City (which is featured in the film,) wasn’t built until the 15th century, and the style of clothing dates to around the 15th century as well.

A Little Background:
China has a very proud tradition as a leading world civilization. It is currently in a period of transition.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, China was impacted by major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. The resulting civil disillusionment opened the door for a takeover by MAO Zedong’s Communist party. They established a socialist system that tightly controlled all aspects of life in China – and isolated China from the rest of the world.

In recent times, however, China has made changes to become more closely associated with other countries of the world.
