Most Parisian buildings have mansard roofs, with almost vertical slopes. (Epcot’s are made of copper and slate.) This provides the attic area with sufficient headspace that its small rooms can be used as living quarters.
Usually families that own apartments in the building also own a room in the attic. They rent them to students or provide them for their ‘au pairs’ (nannies.)
